Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

November 15th is America Recycles Day. Bend Garbage & Recycling offers commingle and glass recycling in the city and county, yard debris and commercial food waste recycling within the Bend city limits.

Here are some recycling tips to get you started:
  • Purchase items made from recycled materials and local products when possible.
  • Reduce paper and ink by printing in black and white and on both sides of the paper.
  • Donate household items instead of throwing them away.
  • Use reusable totes at the grocery store. Bring plastic grocery bags back to the store for reuse.
  • If possible, do not buy items that use Styrofoam in the packaging. Styrofoam does not decompose.
  • Clamshells are plastic containers used for packaging berries, lettuce and bakery items are not accepted in our local recycling program. They need to go as trash or be reused.
For more information about what can and cannot be recycled in your local market, contact Bend Garbage & Recycling at 541-382-2263 or visit bendgarbage.com

Can Garden Hoses go in your Commingle Recycling Carts?

No, Garden hoses are not accepted in your commingle recycling or yard debris carts. To achieve a successful program, it is important to only include materials that are accepted in your local recycling program. Garden hoses are a contaminant and should go in the trash cart, or if it can be reused, donate it to a thrift store.

Yard debris program accepts grass clippings, brush, weeds, plant prunings, pine needles, branches no larger than 2" in diameter and 36" in length and raw fruit and vegetable scraps.

Please Keep Plastic Bags Out of Curbside Recycling Carts

Please Keep Plastic Bags Out of Curbside Recycling Carts

Plastic bags are a common contaminant in curbside recycling.  Please do not put plastic bags, or other film plastics in your blue commingle recycling cart.  Examples of other film plastics are: saran wrap, paper towel wrapping, newspaper wrap, bubble wrap, etc.

Plastic bags that end up in the recycling carts get tangled and jam up the sorting machinery at the recycling processor. These contaminants can also force the recycling facility to shut down the sorting line several times throughout the day in order to clear the machinery of plastic bags.

Please recycle your plastic bags at your nearest participating grocery stores.

For more information on what can and can’t be recycled in Bend Garbage & Recycling’s service area, please visit bendgarbage.com and download a recycling guide.
