Plastic Bags Cannot Be Recycled Curbside

Plastic bags are a common contaminant in curbside recycling. Please do not put plastic bags or any other film plastic (saran wrap, paper towel plastic wrap, bubble wrap, trash bags) in your blue recycling cart.

Plastic bags and other plastic film that end up in the recycling carts jam the machinery at the recycled processor and can cause the facility to shut down the sorting line several times throughout the day. Workers have to clim on the machinery to cut the plastic from the machines. It is important to follow the recycling guidelines for your area. See the pictures below for what happens when plastic bags are put in your recycling carts.

Tips for the Holidays: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Shopping:
Purchase gifts with limited packaging. Opt out of getting a bag at the store and bring your reuseable tote when holiday shopping.

Send e-cards or recycled cards:
If you can, send out electronic holiday cards to reduce paper waste. Try to purchase cards made out of recycled paper if you are mailing them out.

Use an earth-friendly alternative for gift wrap:
Gift wrap alternatives could be scarves, handkerchiefs, bandannas, old posters, maps or newspaper.

Holiday items you can recycle:
Regular gift wrapping paper (no foil), paper shopping bags, gift boxes, holiday cards and envelopes, packing paper, cardboard packing pieces, holiday catalogs.

Holiday items that can't go in your blue recycling cart:
Liners and tissue paper from shopping bags and shoe/gift boxes, ribbon, foil backed wrapping paper, foil backed wrapping paper, plastic bags and wrappers, Styrofoam.

Electronics:
Remember to recycle your old electronics at Deschutes Recycling, located at Knott Landfill in Bend. TVs, computers, monitors, desktop printers, keyboards and mice can be recycled for free. Other electronics can be recycled for a nominal fee.

For more information on how to reduce your waste and other reuse options, visit www.rethinkwasteproject.org.

Before tossing old items in the trash, consider donating them to one of the many thrift stores in our area.

Let's Pull Together

Let's Pull Together is a noxious weed eradication event consisting of collaborative partnerships all joining together.

Why pull noxious weeds?
Noxious weeds are non-native invasive species which threaten our ecosystem. They not only crowd our native plants, but they starve wildlife, use water and create allergens. They also provide tremendous ladder fuel which during wildfires can radically change the speed and fury at which wildfires burn.

How to get involved:
Bring your weeding tool of choice, your friends and family and join in. Meet us at any one of our locations on June 13th at 9:00 am. Our site coordinators and on-site noxious weed experts will assist you in identifying native plants and noxious weeds. Sites are family friendly for children of all ages.

Our weed pull event will be followed by a celebration for our hardworking volunteers!
Festivities are free for all volunteers!
Bend Festivities: Noon at the Westside Venue in the Old Mill District. The Westside Venue is on the west side of the river at the footbridge in the Old Mill District.
Relax and enjoy live music, lunch from Cafe Yumm, and refreshing beverages including beer for Cascade Brewery. Prizes awarded to volunteers right after lunch!

Winter Weather Guidelines

  • Please maintain access to roll carts, containers and enclosures by clearing snow and ice. Bend Garbage & Recycling drivers are generally working by themselves and icy conditions or areas not shoveled can make it impossible for them to provide service.
  • Bag wet waste to help prevent garbage from freezing to the bottom of your roll cart.
  • Fireplace ashes must be COLD. Bend Garbage & Recycling has had instances where warm ashes flared up in the trucks.
  • Bag packing peanuts, cold ashes, kitty litter and any other debris that could easily blow around while your roll cart is being emptied.
If you have any questions, please contact the Bend Garbage & Recycling office at 541-382-2263 or visit our website at bendgarbage.com
